Meet Mary Nattabi Mirembe

In the world of Fashion, every new product or style begins with an idea. Fashion design is the art of application of design and aesthetics or natural beauty to clothing and accessories. Fashion designing involves a set of skills that range from market research and creativity to sketching and fabric selection. Fashion design is influenced by cultural and social attitudes, and has varied over time and place. The fashion designers guide the process from inception to production.

Today we meet Mary Nattabi Mirembe, the Director of Nattah.M.Collections, who is very passionate about Fashion and Design and this is what we asked.

So, who is Mary Mirembe ?

I am a graduate of Industrial Art from Makerere University with a major in Fashion and Design. I worked for someone after campus for a while then I later decided to start my own business


In a nutshell, how would you define fashion designing?

Fashion Designing is an Art of creating/developing an idea or something from scratch to something more valuable.


What is a typical day life for a fashion designer?

I wake up at 5:30am then am usually out of home by 7:30am and by 8:30am am at my shop. I normally have work to start with like drafting, cutting, stitching and looking for clients' fabric. My day ends at 8:00pm after setting work for the following day.


What particular skills do you bring to your workplace ?

I do sketch work, drafting, cutting, tracing, sewing and I also do administrative work for my shop

Why fashion design of all career paths?

Fashion Designing has always been my dream profession.


Anything cool about your job?

I am my own Boss and also I love seeing people dressed in my clothes


Any Challenges ?

I normally work till late because you have to fix extra time to finish people's clothes and working on pressure as well


How did you get your current job ?

I decided to open up my own shop in town to be more accessible


What subjects did you take in school and how have they influenced your career path ?

I chose Art and it helped me discover my passion and also developed my designing skills


What is your Education to date?

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial and Fine Art


What aspects of your Education System have proven most important for your job?

I learnt how to express myself and how to present my final products/clothes


What trends are you seeing in Fashion Design ie what is the future like for the field ?

In a few years, Fashion Designing going to be on a higher level because there's a lot of creativity in the upcoming generation for instance the old fashion trend has been brought back in new style which promising


Which key people influenced your career direction ?

It was mainly my Parents and my Aunt who is also in the same field. They gave me unconditional support and always encouraged me that I can make it. They always told me am the best so I did my best as well


What is your dream job?

Fashion Designing has always been my dream job


What have been the most rewarding moments in your career so far?

Everytime I design brides' and bride maids' clothes and they come out stunning, its a big reward for me
 

As a student, how did you cope up with the pressure to succeed / excel in class?

I have always been in competitive classes, so pressure was just normal because you just have to excel whether you want it or not


What advise would you give someone considering this job?

They should follow their dreams because I also did and always talked to God about it and am sure it was His will


What kind of work experience would provide a good background for this position?

Work with someone more experienced (a fellow designer) to gain experience before you start your own Fashion House. One needs to have a clue on how things are done however educated you are

I encourage students out there who have a passion for Fashion to follow their heart's desires. Let people's negative attitude not put you down. One can suceed in any field, its all about seeking God first, hard work/ work smart and loving Art because Fashion is an Art, it always gets better the more you practice
