Meet Gloria Nanfuka

Morning Show host and Senior Officer in charge of Traffic on 95.9 Touch fm

In the bid to bring the best career stories from the professionals in the field to inspire you on your career path, We caught up with Gloria,the Lady who makes the morning show on 95.9 Touch fm rock. This is what we asked

Describe your typical day ?

First order of business, Present the show, (I am currently without a co-host), 6-10am, after the show, have breakfast as I check my emails. I respond to those that need my response. Update other members of the traffic team on any changes as regards adverts, Read newspapers and plan for the next day's show, attend planning meetings for different activations the station is running

What are your main tasks and responsibilities at work

Hosting the early morning show, 6-10am(Mon-Fri) and Sundays 8-10am. Everything traffic(There is a lot involved but basically, scheduling adverts and making sure they run, generating reports for clients

What are your main challenges ?

I am not a morning person so getting up at about 5am daily is a challenge. Finding interesting topics for discussion. I currently do not have a co host and that makes hosting a morning show a bit of a challenge

What particular skills do you bring to your workplace ?

Ability to think on my feet, creativity,fun personality on air, knowledge/being informed/being in the know of what is happening and forming an intelligent opinion, music knowledge

What'scool about your job ?

I get paid to play music and talk

What's not cool about your job ?

The early mornings, it is very competitive industry and you're always under scrutiny

How did you get your current job ?

I heard about the opening from a friend, I applied for it and made it through numerous interviews and voice tests

Which key people influenced your career direction ?

Power fm. They were the first station I listened to that made me feel like I wanted to be on the other side. Power fm is my first love as far as radio stations go. 

Does your job allow to give you a life style that you are happy with?

To a large extent yes

What subjects did you take in school and how have they influenced your career path ?

Well, I studied all the sciences up to O level, offered Physics, Economics, Math and French at A Level. I am not sure they have influenced it in anyway; maybe in the future

What is your Education to date?

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Building Economics from Kyambogo University

What aspects of your Education System have proven most important for your job?

The extra curricular activities that allowed me to discover and nurture my other skills outside of the classroom.

Have you considered undertaking, or do you plan to undertake any further training as part of your job?

When I can afford it, I want to undertake some training in Marketing and Public Relations

What have been the most rewarding events in your career so far?

Just getting an opportunity to be on radio, to learn from people who have way more experience than myself and to be trusted to host a show by myself makes pretty much everyday, give or take a few grouchy mornings, a rewarding experience

What personal qualities do you have that help in your career?

 I am inquisitive, talkative and warm. I've been told I have a certain quality that puts people at ease around me

What is your dream job?

Features reporter for the BBC focus on Africa, Head of PR and Communications for a multi-National

What are the most important personal characteristics required for the job?

Creativity, Curiosity, a desire to have fun or influence

What advise would you give someone considering this job?

It's not all fun and games. It's a lot of work to become the best. It is a very competitive industry. There are days you'll want to give up, but on those days, remember why you started.

What kind of work experience would provide a good background for this position?

Any background. This position is mostly about personality and most of the skill is gained on the job. Do not let your background stop you.
