The largest cathedral you know started with a single block. This is also true for everything else, the pyramids, the obelisks, the white house, your home, the Mapeera house, name it. After the first block, then followed the consistency of placing several others over that one in a systematic manner.

The best movie you have watched started with a single syllable on a piece of paper and then followed a comma, then a sentence, then a paragraph, a chapter and then a thrilling tale. Before long, we were all seated in the cinema watching the marvel that Harry Potter wrote. The bottom line is, there is always a start to something. There is always a simple small art that has to be mastered in order for the complex to perform or to form a whole. It is therefore a man who has mastered chiselling at a tree stamp, who will sculpt a great burst.

David was a small shepherd boy who took his father`s sheep out to graze everyday. He looked for grass good enough for the sheep to eat. From his own words, he protected his sheep from all kinds of danger. In this way he learned to fight lions in the wilderness and chase away the foxes that sought to make his sheep prey. This must so often have relied on him throwing stones and charging at these mighty animals without fear. Shepherding was often so mundane that the small boy picked a hobby. He learned to play the flute. There he was, sitting on a rock in the wilderness, playing and fine tuning his instrument to his audience that was sheep, birds, wild animals and the grasses. Even then he continuously played away in that solitude hence becoming a master of his instrument.

It was not so long until the king of the land was haunted. He also realised that only music could calm him down. It wasn't any kind of music though, it was fine music and for fine music to be played, there needed to be a master who was exceptional at his instrument as was David with the flute. Suddenly, in a small moment, David`s audience changed from the wilderness to the palace.

Soon enough, the kingdom needed a saviour from the tormentor that Goliath was. It was not an army commander who could save them, neither was it a warrior so clever at battle, the saviour was a small boy who had mastered the art of throwing a stone, who had learnt to use a slingshot. Suddenly, David`s destiny changed from protecting sheep to protecting the people of his kingdom.

The story would perhaps have been different had the small boy spent his time in the wilderness complaining, brooding and being lazy. It was from the smallness of playing for a wild audience that prepared him for the palace courts. It was clearly his continuous chase of wild animals that gave him the belief that he could face the enemy giant. And, that's how giants are slayed. Like the saying goes, the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, and as you walk diligently, you will surely reach your destination.

Master the small things that you do everyday, if it is to write, write it doesn't matter if you don't have readers. If it is to speak, speak to the people in your WhatsApp group. If it is to clean, start with your room. Remember, the small thing you master now is the starting block to a great bridge into the kind of things or life that you desire. Do not give up or stop but rather, master smallness, it is the key to greatness.
