The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

A Medical Laboratory Technologist carries out investigations on clinical and other biological specimens for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment, disease control and research. They conduct quality control in health, teaching and research laboratories; train junior laboratory workers & other medical personnel and is responsible for the management of laboratories under their charge. They provide a foundation for scientific and standard procedures on which health promotion is based. Displays empathy, integrity, respect of persons and human rights. They supervise the Laboratory Technicians.

Key Objectives

At the end of the programme the Medical  Laboratory Technologist will be able to:

1. Receive,  collect  (where  applicable),  process  specimens  and  carry  out  laboratory analyses 
2. Manage laboratory records 
3. Ensure excellent quality in laboratory services 
4. Care for laboratory equipment and instruments 
5. Ensure  a  healthy  and  safe  working  environment 
6. Participate in surveillance of diseases  and research
7. Plan  and  implement  continuing  education for self and others

Course Entry Requirements

Direct Entry

2 principal passes in Biology and Chemistry which are essential.

Relevant subject is Physics.

Other are Maths, nutrition.

In addition one should posses 5 credit passes in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English in "O" level subjects.

Mature Entry

2 years working experience with a Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology.
