Architecture school is a jungle, a mystery. No less than an army academy, you will possibly fall unless you have the will and insight to go through this maze. Past the high social status, the prestige, grandeur and wealth many an architect enjoy, architecture school is a manifestation that good things come at a cost. Let us go through the things I learnt in architecture school.

  1. Nothing is as it seems. The road is not a road, it may be a path. The empty room is not just a room, it may or not be space. The bed is not necessarily a bed but instead a sleeping space. This means therefore, that everything you see can be something else and that something else can still be it. Perhaps this is confusing, the best example is, that a door can be a door, a door in another way can be an entrance or even a passage.  Now I hope you understand, or maybe notThe results of this are profound, the mind of an architect is a creative. It is imperative than one learns to make something out of nothing. This is the very essence of this training, creativity, the ability to see the things that the rest of the world does not see.
  2. There are no liberties. The architect as long as there is a student, has no rights or the liberties of other students. You have probably heard the stories of all the freedom that campus comes with, the partying, the sleep name it. These however are not inclusive of architecture students. In the case that you have a girlfriend, you will need to prepare her for the worst. In the case that you do not have one, the good news is, you will not need one. Soon enough you will become acquainted with a friend called portfolio. He will then be your companion for the rest of your years there. It is therefore important for you to know that if you want to be extra ordinary, you should do extra ordinary things therefore.
  3. There are no guarantees in life. In architecture school, there are no guarantees. One does not have privileges. It is not a guarantee that several hours of work will get you good marks. It is not an assurance that if the course is five years, you will spend five years in school.Likewise in life, you will soon learn that the world is not fair and that there are no guarantees. You are not entitled to what you get. Sometimes the world is just good to you. However, one should do their best.
  4. When you get lemons thrown at you, make lemonade, always make lemonade. The years in architecture school shall see you depressed, discouraged, beaten, crushed, lonely, away from friends. The workload will make you feel like a slave. The expenses will definitely make you broke. The rest of the world will be happier than you. Definitely happier than you. You will lose weight, sometimes cry in front of your colleagues. In brief, you might face your hardest times in architecture school. The good news is, you fight, you do not give up. Out of all this sorrow, you are expected to get and present the best out of the situation.Whenever you meet challenges in life, this is only a chance to make lemonade, to turn this situation into good.
  5. You are not smart, you are the smartest person in the world and you can be and do anything in this world. Architecture school only trains architects of the simple minded. For the highly sophisticated, architecture school trains the best musicians, the best artists, the best lawyers, the best business men among others. In architecture school, you are taught to have confidence in yourself, to believe and to get the best out of yourself. It is amazing what you can achieve. You are taught to `learn`, you are taught to `create` and he who learns these things, will conquer the world.

In a nutshell, all the hell is worth it. You would rather join architecture school it is the best place to be.
