The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

Background

The changes in the global, regional and local policies and the technological advancements involved make it imperative for the majority of Ugandans today to respond effectively to the challenges of development and modernization. This however cannot be achieved without a sound knowledge of development aspects to address the problems of underdevelopment that are found in Uganda. The Degree in Development Studies probes into the problem of underdevelopment scans the global environment and provides thought full solutions for sustainable development.
The Bachelors degree in Development Studies is a multidisciplinary program that borrows widely from the economic, social, political, environment and cultural backgrounds, so as to meet the current and future needs of Ugandan in particular, and the world at large. Graduates of Bachelor of Development Studies are expected to obtain placements in government, development organizations, either internationally or in Uganda and the private sector.

Rationale for the Course

Today there is very few skilled manpower especially at graduate levels in development studies. The students of this course will be provided with skills, knowledge and the right attitudes that will enable them to contribute to the social, political and economic transformation of the disadvantaged communities in Uganda and the outside world.

Objectives

  • To produce graduates who are broadly trained to bring about sustainable and equitable development in Uganda and the world at large.
  • To produce graduates that are development conscious, who will be able to facilitate men, women and children to have access to and control of development affairs in their own context.
  • To produce graduates who will enable the disadvantaged, especially in rural areas to diversify their economic situation and improve their livelihoods in a sustainable manner.

NOTE:
The degree of Bachelor of Development Studies will take three years based on a semester system, leading to the award of Bachelor of Development Studies. It strongly emphasizes policy concientization and formulation at national, regional and local levels, but with critical analysis of global issues.

Course Entry Requirements

At least five (5) passes at “O” level (UCE) or its equivalent and two relevant principle passes at “A” level (UACE) obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.

A post “O” level diploma or certificate with at least two years relevant experience in the desired field.
