The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

The Bachelor of Computational Science (BCS) of Uganda Christian University aims to produce students who integrate Mathematical and Computing skills in the learning of basic sciences. Increasingly, mathematical models and computational techniques are being used to gain a better understanding of the world that we live in and simulate real world events. In many branches of science, computation is given equal weight to theory and experiment. From financial modeling to waste management, from drug design to understanding of infectious diseases and from medical imaging to oil recovery, all these and many more areas need people with mathematical, computing and science skills.

The BCS degree seeks to train and equip students with key mathematical, computational and science skills. The degree program is built on a core of advanced mathematics and computer science courses linked with a specialist area of science. These core courses provide training in the formulation, analysis, modeling and simulation of problems in science, engineering, commerce and industry. Typical areas of specialization are physics, financial mathematics, biology, applied mathematics, bioinformatics, economics, statistics and computer science. The general mathematical and computing skills obtained from the core courses are applied in a sophisticated manner in a specialization area.

Students will undertake a mandatory eight-week internship after second year, which aims to introduce them to the application of computational science to scientific and industrial problems in a real world setting. In addition, students in this program will have the opportunity to use a range of advanced computing systems such as Matlab, Maple, R and S-plus.

The major vision of the programme is to provide an education in basic sciences befitting a centre of excellence whose graduates are able to distinguish themselves in their character, capabilities and skills. (Source: Uganda Christian University, School of Science&Technology)
